In the 1860’s, the fur trade had discovered this beautiful and bountiful area. In 1866, surveyors for Collins Overland Telegraph were working in the area but it wasn’t until 1900 that the area had any non- aboriginal residents. In 1913, the community of Smithers (named after the chairman of the board of the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway) was established as the rail line’s divisional point between Prince George and Prince Rupert. Smithers quickly grew into a thriving community and on Oct. 21, 1921 became incorporated as British Columbia’s first “village”. The area is very attractive and offers a huge variety of recreation for all seasons which include skiing, snowmobiling, hiking in the mountains, hunting, and of course, the world famous Bulkley River provides world class fishing for the local anglers and the hundreds of visitors. Mining, Logging, and tourism support the economy of Smithers and neighboring communities, and ranching has a strong foothold on the growth and development of this beautiful valley nestled between the snow capped and glaciered mountain ranges of the Hudson Bay range, the Babines, and the Telkwa and Hazelton’s. Smithers is now a thriving city with a population of 5000 or so and has all the things you would expect of a city of our size such as schools, gov’t agencies, and shopping. We also have a hospital, airport, recreational facilities, and friendly people. Smithers is also a hub for artisans - accomplished photographers, painters, dancers, writers and musicians - who are all busy creating a vibrant culture. Topping the area’s music is the Mid-Summer Music Festival held at the Smithers Fair Grounds every June. TAXES: $1000 (2005) PRICE: $1,600,000 CND SOLD! |
